Executive Management
The Academic Group is led by Martin L. Kern, who serves as Executive Director. He was a principal member of Academic's original Planning Team. Mr. Kern has been with Academic since its founding in 1990 and has more than 20 years experience in the healthcare professional liability insurance industry.
Dai R.M. Griffith is Executive Vice President and Chief Underwriting Officer. He was also a principal member of the original Planning Team. Mr. Griffith has more than 25 years experience with medical malpractice insurance, specializing in program development and underwriting for academic faculty and teaching hospitals.
James Thornton is Chief Financial Officer at Academic. Mr. Thornton has significant experience in insurance statutory accounting and principles. He has been with the company since 2000 and has more than 35 years experience as a senior financial manager for insurance organizations.
Richard Brooks serves as Academic's Internal Compliance Officer. He has extensive financial and performance audit experience, and is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). He is also a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
Steve Capone serves as Senior Underwriting Manager. Mr. Capone has many years underwriting experience and specializes in underwriting faculty clinicians and attendant staff.
